If you terminate your enrolment during the academic year you could be entitled to a reimbursement of tuition fees.

If you are not enrolled at any other Dutch institute of higher learning you could be entitled to a reimbursement of part of the tuition paid to HKU. The amount you are entitled to depends on the date of your application for termination of enrolment and the tuition fee tariff you pay.

Statutory tuition fee

You are entitled to a refund of 1/12 part of the statutory tuition fee for every month you are no longer enrolled as a student, when you unenrol before June 1st. Your unenrolment request must be received through Studielink no later than 31 May. For unenrolment after this date no reimbursement is possible.

Upon graduation other rules can apply. Read more about unenrolment upon graduation.

For example you request to terminate your enrolment on January 15, so you can be unenrolled as of February 1. In this case, 7/12 part of the tuition fee will be reimbursed.

Institution tuition fee

In calculating reimbursement, there is a two-month waiting period. Only with a termination of enrolment before April 1 you will receive 1/12 of the tuition fee for each month that you are no longer enrolled minus the two-month waiting period. For unenrolment after this date no reimbursement is possible.

There is no waiting period for reimbursement when you terminate enrolment upon graduation or due to illness or force majeure. Please always report any exceptional circumstances to the student counselor timely.

For example you request to terminate your enrolment on January 15, so you can be unenrolled as of February 1. In this case, 5/12 part of the tuition fee will be reimbursed.

The refund

How you receive your refund depends on how you paid your tuition fee.

• If you have paid your tuition fee in one instalment, the amount to which you are entitled is immediately refunded.
• If you have agreed to pay your tuition fee in five instalments, the payment authorisation will be terminated and the balance will be settled.

No refund

Students with partial enrolment and contract students are never entitled to a refund of fees.

Rules

The rules for reimbursement of tuition fees are defined in the enrolment regulations
