All courses at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht are taught in Dutch, unless otherwise indicated. Students who have had their prior education outside The Netherlands or Flanders, must comply with the language requirement.

Exemption Dutch language requirement

If your training was clearly in Dutch, you can apply for an exemption from the Dutch language requirement. HKU will evaluate if you qualify for an exemption based on a certified copy of your diploma and transcript. It is possible HKU requests additional documentation from you.

Exemption English language requirement

* If your training was clearly in English, you can apply for an exemption from the English language requirement. HKU will evaluate if you qualify for an exemption based on a certified copy of your diploma and transcript. It is possible HKU requests additional documentation from you.


* HKU can grant students an exemption from the English language test based on a diploma achieved in some countries in Europe. Download the complete list of countries and diplomas to check to which countries and diplomas an exemption applies.

Bachelor courses and Associate Degrees


A Dutch language proficiency* of NT2 - program 2 / CNaVT - profile 'Educatief Professioneel' - ERK C1 (formerly known as PAT) or profiel 'Educatief Startbekwaam' - ERK B2 (formerly known as PTHO).


* By successfully completing the 18+/21+ exam (Colloqium Doctum) you meet the NT2, program 2 requirement. Please note: this exam is only available in Dutch. Please find more information here.


An English language proficiency is only possible for:

• Bachelor of Fine Art

The minimum score should be

IELTS 6 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 550 / TOEFL Computer: 213 / TOEFL Internet: 80 / TOEIC: Listening & Reading 670 + Speaking & Writing 290 / Cambridge Esol: CAE-C, CEFR B2


• Bachelor of Music at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium

The minimum score should be

IELTS: 5.5 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 525/ TOEFL Computer: 196/ TOEFL Internet: 70, TOEIC: Listening & Reading 620 + Speaking & Writing 260, Cambridge Esol: FCE-C, CEFR B1


Master courses


A Dutch language proficiency of NT2 - program 2 / CNaVT - profile 'Educatief Professioneel' - ERK C1 (formerly known as PAT) or profiel 'Educatief Startbekwaam' - ERK B2 (formerly known as PTHO) is possible for the:

  • Master Interior Architecture
  • Master Crossover Creativity
  • Master of Music
  • Master of Arts in Education

An English language proficiency is only possible for the:

  • Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design, programme Fine Art
  • Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design, programme Scenography
  • Master of Music
  • Master of Arts in Education

The minimum score should be

IELTS: 6 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 550/ TOEFL Computer: 213 / TOEFL Internet: 80 / TOEIC: Listening & Reading 670 + Speaking & Writing 290 / Cambridge Esol: CAE-C, CEFR B2

Preparatory courses and pre-masters


A Dutch language proficiency of NT2 - program 2 / CNaVT - profile 'Educatief Professioneel' - ERK C1 (formerly known as PAT) or profiel 'Educatief Startbekwaam' - ERK B2 (formerly known as PTHO).


An English language proficiency is only possible for:

• Music Preparatory Course HKU Utrechts Conservatorium and Music Pre-master at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium


The minimum score should be

IELTS: 5 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 500 / TOEFL Internet: 60 / TOEIC: Listening & Reading 620 + Speaking & Writing 260 / Cambridge Esol: FCE-C, CEFR B1

Deadline language test

Please send a copy of the certificate of your test before 1 May in order to enrol in September!

IELTS and TOEFL

You can find more information about the tests on www.toefl.org and www.ielts.org. You will be requested to send a proof of your test result after you have applied for a course at HKU via Studielink.

NT2 language test

Please visit the website Staatsexamen NT2 to find more information about the NT2 Dutch Language test.

Be aware! Plan your language test in time. It may take some time before you can take the test and before the results are known.

Chinese students

Chinese students who apply for the English Bachelor or Master courses must submit a Nuffic Certificate before 1 July in order to apply for a Study MVV.
