An inevitable part of your study is tuition. On this page you will find all information regarding fees, payment and more.
There are two types of fees: the statutory and institution tuition fee. The government determines the amount of the statutory tuition fee annually. Based on this HKU determines the institution tuition fees. The statutory tuition fee for 2016-2017 is set at € 1.984. The statutory tuition fee for 2017-2018 is set at € 2.006.
Depending on your situation, you pay statutory or institution tuition fee. The department for Academic and Student Affairs shall establish which rate applies to you based on available information.
Payment of tuition
When you choose to pay in one instalment, the amount will be deducted around 25 September. When
you choose to pay in five instalments, the amounts you owe for 2016-2017 will be deducted around the following dates:
1st instalment 26 September 2016 € 396,88 (+ € 24 administrative costs)
2nd instalment 25 November 2016 € 396,88
3rd instalment 26 January 2017 € 396,88
4th instalment 27 March 2017 € 396,88
5th instalment 25 May 2017 € 396,88
See our rules for automatic debiting of tuition fee in instalments.
NB: For non EER students who need to apply for a residence permit it is not possible to pay in installments during their first enrollment at HKU.
Why are institution tuition fees higher than the statutory tuition?
HKU receives no government funding for students who pay institution tuition fees. To offset this, HKU included in the institution tuition fee the amount of funding that we would receive otherwise. This amount is indexed once every 3 years.
The amount you will need to spend for study materials depends on the course you are attending.
Costs of living
The costs of living in The Netherlands can vary greatly based on personal choices. For an indication of these costs, go to extra costs.
If you terminate your enrolment during the academic year you can apply for reimbursement of tuition fee.
Fulltime bachelor and most master students could be eligible for student financing if they have the nationality of one of the countries of the European Union or the European Economic Area.
Partially enrolled students
As a partially enrolled student you pay exam fees amounting to € 1.984. This is the institution tuition fee tariff 1 and is non-refundable. For academic year 2017-2018 this fee will be € 2.006.
